Skateboarding Star Terry Kennedy to be Released from Prison After Serving Time for Fatal Assault

Former professional skateboarder Terry Kennedy, a prominent figure in the street skating world, is scheduled for release from incarceration later this month, bringing a close to the chapter involving the assault conviction that tragically led to the death of a fellow skater.

The Illinois Department of Corrections has confirmed that Kennedy is set to be released on December 31, 2025, having received credit that reduced his original sentence. Following his release, he will remain under supervised release until June 30, 2026.

Kennedy's conviction stems from a July 27, 2021, altercation outside a Comfort Suites in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. Prosecutors stated that Kennedy struck 23-year-old Josiah Kassahun, who consequently fell and sustained a fatal head injury upon hitting the pavement. A medical examiner later determined Kassahun died from multiple internal injuries related to the incident.

Initially facing a charge of first-degree murder, Kennedy was acquitted of that specific charge in December 2022. However, he was convicted on two counts of aggravated battery. In February 2023, he received two five-year prison terms, to be served consecutively at a 50 percent rate, culminating in an effective five-year sentence.

Prior to his legal troubles, "TK" was one of the most visible and well-known names in skateboarding. A native of Long Beach, California, Kennedy was recognized for both his technical skill and his larger-than-life personality. He was a frequent competitor in major events like the X Games and the Maloof Money Cup. His career success extended into significant sponsorships with brands like Baker Skateboards and Pharrell Williams' Billionaire Boys Club, and he was a co-founder of the Fly Society clothing and music brand. His fame transcended the skate park, with numerous appearances on MTV shows such as Viva La Bam and Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory. Kennedy also appeared in Snoop Dogg's music video for "Drop It Like It's Hot" and was featured in multiple entries of the popular Skate video game series.
