Legends Never Fade: Celebrating Harold Hunter's Legacy

Photographer Jonathan Mannion joined forces with the Harold Hunter Foundation to commemorate the legacy of skateboarding icon and actor Harold Hunter, who would have turned 50 yesterday. Across Downtown Manhattan, fresh prints showcasing never-before-seen images captured by Mannion during his skate sessions with Harold in 1997 have been displayed. Each print features a QR code providing access to an upcoming summer event, as well as insights into Harold's life story and his influential use of skateboarding within the community.

Beyond his affiliation with Zoo York, Hunter was cherished for his vibrant and inclusive personality, extending beyond the skateboarding world to secure various modeling and acting roles throughout the '90s. This included prominent campaigns with Tommy Hilfiger and appearances in Larry Clark's seminal film, "Kids" (1995). Reflecting on Hunter's impact, actress Rosario Dawson, a fellow native of his neighborhood, remarked, "Harold's skateboard was more than just a mode of transportation. He became renowned for his personality and spirit, welcoming anyone to New York and guiding them through the city." Tragically, Hunter passed away from a heart attack in the Manhattan housing project where he grew up on February 17, 2006, at the age of 31.

In a statement about the collaboration, Mannion expressed his profound admiration for Harold's spirit, stating, "Through these insights into Harold's essence, I've chosen to honor him on what would have been his 50th birthday, seeking to unveil deeper layers of his humanity." He added, "From contagious laughter to moments of contemplation and genuine connections with the community, Harold was truly unparalleled."
