Lakers Win The First NBA In-Season Tournament Cup!

by Maurice Pendarvis |

In a thrilling showdown in Las Vegas, the Los Angeles Lakers emerged victorious against the Indiana Pacers, securing the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament title with a 123-109 triumph. Anthony Davis played a pivotal role in the victory, delivering an impressive performance with season highs of 41 points and 20 rebounds. Austin Reaves contributed significantly with 28 points, while tournament MVP LeBron James added 24 points and 11 rebounds. D'Angelo Russell chipped in with 13 points.

On the Pacers side, Tyrese Haliburton stood out with 20 points and 11 assists, alongside Bennedict Mathurin, who also scored 20 points, and Aaron Nesmith with 15.

Although the game didn't affect the regular season standings, both teams competed fiercely for the coveted trophy. Lakers players on standard two-way contracts earned $500,000 each, and the Pacers received $200,000 per player. Two-way deal players received half of those amounts.

The Lakers faced a formidable and energized Pacers team led by the emerging star Tyrese Haliburton, who had become a standout player during the tournament. However, the Lakers managed to limit Haliburton's impact, with Reddish taking on the defensive responsibilities and forcing him to pass rather than attempt challenging shots.

Throughout the game, the Lakers maintained control, although the Pacers stayed within striking distance. It wasn't until a decisive 15-3 run by the Lakers in the late fourth quarter that they turned a narrow 100-96 lead into a more comfortable 115-99 advantage.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement, resembling that of a playoff game, especially with a pro-Lakers crowd in attendance. For LeBron James, adding this title to his illustrious career marked another significant achievement, as he clinched the NBA In-Season Tournament title to complement his four NBA championships.

The game drew the attention of several sports legends and celebrities in attendance, including basketball Hall of Famers Julius Erving and Shaquille O'Neal, football Hall of Famers Tim Brown and Shannon Sharpe, tennis icon Steffi Graf, boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., celebrity chef Bobby Flay, and rapper Flavor Flav. Members of the two-time champion Las Vegas Aces, including WNBA Finals MVP A'ja Wilson, were also present to witness the intense competition.
