Berlin Fashion Week: Stealing the Spotlight for Young Designers, with a Focus on Black Creatives

by Maurice Pendarvis |

Move over, fashion capitals of old! Berlin Fashion Week is rapidly becoming the go-to destination for young designers seeking to make their mark on the industry.

This year, Berlin solidified its reputation as a hub for fresh talent with a special focus on Black creatives. Black in Fashion, a two-day pop-up event held in early July, wasn't just a runway extravaganza. It provided a vital platform for seven Black German designers to showcase their work and connect with the fashion world.

Beyond the vibrant displays, the event fostered important discussions about the challenges faced by Black designers. Attendees also enjoyed the opportunity to meet the designers themselves and take home pieces from their collections.

EMEKA SUITS

Sustainable style with a social impact! Emeka Suits, founded by Sydney Nwakanma, empowers African tailors by crafting unique garments from recycled fabrics. Their mission: reduce textile waste and create jobs, all while offering one-of-a-kind fashion.

Berlin-based designer Buki Akomolafe fuses her German and Nigerian heritage into chic, sustainable clothing. Launched in 2016, her label offers high-quality, handcrafted pieces that combine classic tailoring with a modern twist. From organic fabrics to bold wax prints, Akomolafe's collection is designed to empower the wearer.
Berlin-based designer Dennis Chuene (founded 2008) offers "detailed tailored apparel with emphasis on individuality." Each piece is handcrafted by Chuene himself, ensuring a one-of-a-kind garment with the designer's signature touch.
Raised in a Rwandan orphanage, Aline Mukamusoni found solace and artistry in beadwork, a skill passed down by the village women. Today, her Amike Studio line translates that tradition into exquisite beaded accessories, captivating even celebrities like Lupita Nyong'o. Each piece is a testament to Mukamusoni's journey and cultural heritage.
The brand describes itself as “unique hair jewelry for the everyday life that will last a lifetime.”
French-Cameroonian designer Sikoti Mbaitjongue launched Sokolata in 2022. The line offers modern, neutral basics for men and women, all crafted with natural African materials. Sokolata redefines African fashion with a focus on comfort and effortless style.
