đź‘‘ Hip-Hop History is Made: Honoring the Pioneers of the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class

The 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony delivered a powerful testament to the ever-evolving soul of music, enshrining a class of legends who proved that "rock & roll" is a state of mind, not just a genre. This year, the spotlight shone brightly on hip-hop, with the induction of two groundbreaking acts that redefined the culture and changed the sound of music forever: OutKast and Salt-N-Pepa. OutKast, the iconic Atlanta duo of André "André 3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, cemented their place in the prestigious Performer category. They were musical futurists who blended Southern funk, psychedelia, and soul, establishing the "Dirty South" as an essential force in hip-hop with their declaration, "The South got something to say." From the laid-back grooves of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik to the conceptual brilliance of Aquemini and the pop mastery of the diamond-selling Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, they consistently pushed boundaries, earning six Grammy Awards and producing generational hits like "Hey Ya!" and "Ms. Jackson."

The induction for OutKast was an emotional and star-studded affair. Fellow Atlanta native Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) delivered a heartfelt induction speech, thanking the duo for shaping his own creative journey. When André 3000 and Big Boi took the stage, they were joined by nearly the entire Dungeon Family collective, a reminder that their greatness was built on community and collaboration. André gave a moving, "freestyle" speech, recalling a comment by fellow inductee Jack White and tearfully stating the profound truth of their beginnings: "Great things start in little rooms." Though André did not perform, Big Boi led a powerful musical tribute featuring artists like Doja Cat, Tyler, the Creator, Janelle Monáe, and Killer Mike, celebrating their genre-bending catalog and showcasing the duo's continuing influence on the new generation of music.

Also celebrated during the ceremony were the dynamic trio Salt-N-Pepa (Cheryl "Salt" James, Sandra "Pepa" Denton, and DJ Spinderella), who were honored with the Musical Influence Award. This award recognized the group’s foundational role in evolving music and impacting culture. As the first female rap act to achieve platinum status, Salt-N-Pepa are undeniable pioneers for women in hip-hop, using their unapologetic and insightful lyrics on relationships and female empowerment to redefine the narrative in a male-dominated genre. Inducted by fellow rap legend Missy Elliott, their fierce performance of hits like "Push It" and "Shoop" proved their enduring power. This dual induction of OutKast and Salt-N-Pepa is a pivotal moment, affirming hip-hop’s status as a core genre of rock & roll and celebrating two groups that didn't just participate in a culture—they built enduring empires.
